Vic child killed after tree branch fall

A CHILD has died and a woman was seriously injured after a tree branch fell on them at a park in Bendigo.

Police said the pair were at Rosalind Park when a large branch has fallen from a tree about 5.20pm (AEDT) and killed the young girl.

The woman, aged in her 30s, was taken to Bendigo Hospital in a serious condition with head injuries, a fractured leg and possible spinal injuries.

City of Greater Bendigo acting chief executive officer Stan Liacos described the girl's death as "an absolute tragedy" and expressed his condolences to her family.

"The greater Bendigo community will be shocked and saddened as they learn of what has happened and our thoughts are with the family and their loved ones," he said.

"Very little information is known at this stage and the City will continue to liaise with emergency services to determine what happened."

City staff will also carry out their own investigations of the site.
