MELBOURNE will ring in the new year with a spectacular fireworks show that will be able to be seen anywhere with a view of the city skyline.
The sky will light up at 9.30pm at Yarra Park and at midnight for the 10-minute extravaganza, which will use two semi-trailer loads of fireworks.
More than 550,000 revellers are expected to pack the city centre, with fireworks to be launched from 22 locations, including city rooftops, by a team of 44 pyrotechnicians.
Celebrations will take place at four places including Docklands, Flagstaff Gardens, Treasury Gardens and Kings Domain.
Lord Mayor Robert Doyle said the addition of Kings Domain ensured the city was covered from all angles to ensure revellers had a good viewing and crowds were dispersed safely.
The four sites will run from 9pm to 1am and include DJs and multimedia entertainment and a countdown ahead of midnight.
The 9.30pm family fireworks will take place at Yarra Park. The same show will also run from Footscray Park.
The City of Melbourne New Year's Eve event is alcohol-free and revellers who flout the rules face fines.
