IF the federal government's level of support doesn't get a bounce after the May budget it will be too late to change leaders, the chief government whip says.
Joel Fitzgibbon says the budget is the government's best chance to turn its fortunes around.
"If we don't get a bounce in the budget we'll be in strife," Mr Fitzgibbon told Sky News on Thursday night, saying he hoped that did not turn out to be the case.
Asked if it was too late for leadership change between the budget and the September 14 election date, Mr Fitzgibbon replied: "Absolutely."
"It's not being contemplated in any case," he said.
He repeated the assertions of former prime minister Kevin Rudd that he is not a candidate.
"People are focused. We are six months from an election. Julia Gillard is a fighter doing a good job," Mr Fitzgibbon said.
